As the name suggests, NordVPN’s Scam Call Protection will attempt to keep your phone safe from unwanted calls. How? Well, it’ll use metrics like call patterns, metadata, and other information to spot, track, and stop telemarketers and other junk. In fact, Nord wants to stop these calls before they ever reach your phone, and in some cases, you won’t even see a “scam likely” type of incoming call on your Android device.
While NordVPN is known for its VPN, it offers a wide range of services. The new call screening feature is part of Nord’s growing “Threat Protection Pro” plan, which already monitors malware, blocks ads, and slows down web trackers.
While Google uses AI and a few other tools toflag and prevent spam calls, and will often use AI to answer the call for you, NordVPN’s Call Protection Mode takes a different approach. Scam Call Protection tracks the metadata instead and spots potential telemarketers and spammers ahead of time. Then, theNordVPN appwill block those calls on your device or alert you on the incoming call screen.
Nord detailed incoming calls labeled “potential spam, telemarketer likely, or financial services likely”. Then, you may choose whether to answer the call or not. The feature is designed with a privacy-first architecture, works seamlessly in the background, and everything happens on-device.
According to the announcement, while this new option is brand new, NordVPN plans to add several useful enhancements in the near future. For example, once it’s up and running, Nord wants to help you better differentiate from spam, scams, banking, and other financial or health services that may try to contact you. The company also mentioned an option to report scam numbers, improved caller ID features, and more.
