If you’re like me and your work revolves around writing text documents, you understand the importance of creating a perfect document that’s free from grammatical errors and sounds natural to readers. I typically use my English knowledge to draft documents, but I also use Microsoft Editor as my go-to tool to improve my writing.
Change My Writing Style
When writing documents or articles for various clients, I’m often asked to be mindful of my writing style. Some clients prefer a formal approach, while others request a more casual tone. The specific style depends on the content I’m working on. However, I often find it challenging to manually distinguish between casual and professional writing. That’s whereMicrosoft Editorbecomes invaluable.
When I access Microsoft Editor, there’s a drop-down icon just below the Editor’s score where I can select my preferred writing style. I have the option to choose between casual, professional, and formal writing.

Once I select a writing style, the Editor’s score adjusts accordingly. Microsoft Editor also provides different suggestions for each writing style, allowing me to review and apply them to improve my Editor score—the higher the Editor score, the better the writing.
On-the-Fly Spelling Checking
I’ve been writing articles for over four years now, but even now, I often make spelling mistakes. I think it’s pretty normal. Nobody’s perfect, and with so many words around us, it is almost impossible to remember the correct spelling of every word. Fortunately, I have Microsoft Editor, whichcorrects me whenever I misspell a word. The best part is that it checks and corrects my spelling as I write.
Whenever Microsoft Editor detects an incorrect spelling, it underlines that word with a red squiggly line. Then, when I click on that word, it shows me the correct spelling. I simply need to choose the correct word, and Microsoft Editor automatically replaces the misspelt word with its correct spelling.

Refine My Writing
Beyond correct spelling, a text document must be grammatically accurate, with proper punctuation and appropriate vocabulary. In short, the document should be thoroughly polished. This is where the Refinement section of Microsoft Editor comes in. It offers various options like clarity, vocabulary, resume, punctuation, and more, allowing me to implement the suggested changes to improve my writing.
The suggestions provided in the Refinement section will align with the writing style I’ve chosen. The best part is that each suggestion includes a brief explanation, helping me understand why the change is necessary.

Get Rid Plagiarized Content
One of the main requirements my clients have for the documents is that they must be original. This means I can’t use content from the internet in my work. That’s understandable, as using someone else’s work without permission is like stealing.
Microsoft Editor has a built-inplagiarism checkerthat helps me identify if any of my content is similar to existing material online. The plagiarism checker is located under the Similarity section, and clicking on it reveals any matching content on the internet. I can then review the suggestions and make the necessary changes to avoid plagiarism.

How to Change Microsoft Editor Settings
By default, you’ll find all the necessary suggestions in the Microsoft Editor panel. However, if you want to change the type of suggestions you receive, you’ll need to edit the Microsoft Editor settings. To do this, click the “File” option in the top-right corner and choose “Options” from the left sidebar.
In the Word Options window, select “Proofing” in the left sidebar, choose “Grammar & Refinements” from the Writing Style drop-down menu, and click “Settings” next to it.

In the Settings window that appears, you’ll find all the suggestions that Microsoft Editor provides. you may check or uncheck a suggestion that you want to see in the Microsoft Editor panel. After that, click “OK” to save the changes.
This is how I use Microsoft Editor to improve my writing. Microsoft Editor is also available in Outlook, so if you want to make sure your emails are grammatically correct, you can use Microsoft Editor for that. Additionally, you can install the Microsoft Editor extension on your browser, such asChromeorEdge. This way, if you’re working on a document online, you can use the editor to get helpful suggestions.
