Shelly has officially joined the “Works with Home Assistant” program, bringing a selection of their Z-Wave devices into the fold. This is big news because Shelly is already very popular in the smart home market and within the Home Assistant community.

Shelly’s retrofit smart switches and relays are a great way to convert “dumb” devices into smart devices. Shelly’s devices fit right in your wall behind your existing switches, letting you control things in clever new ways. There are only five devices that have been certified in this first wave:

The Shelly Wave Pro 1PM fits into an electrical box, while the other devices sit behind a standard plug, switch, or device. The Shelly Wave 1PM Mini holds the title of the world’s smallest Z-Wave smart switch, but it may not be as easy to install. Make sure to remember that in some areas, you might need a professional electrician for installation due to local regulations.

Being Works with Home Assistant certified means you can trust that these devices are going to play nicely with your Home Assistant setup right out of the box. While that sounds like a marketing move, having Shelly’s devices formally certified means they’ve been thoroughly tested to verify they consistently give you the best possible experience with Home Assistant.

For this first round of “Works with Home Assistant” certified products, the focus is squarely on their Z-Wave lines. Z-Wave is a low-powered wireless technology designed specifically for the smart home. It uses a different part of the radio spectrum than WiFi, which means you’re less likely to run into interference issues.

This also makes it better at getting signals through thick walls and communicating over longer distances. This is especially true with the newer “Long Range” version of the standard. Ultimately, Z-Wave devices are ideal if you want to avoid relying on the cloud. Home Assistant essentially acts as your Z-Wave controller using the Z-Wave JS add-on. So, all you need is a Z-Wave adapter to use alongside these devices.

Shelly CTO Leon Kralj said, “Many of our users already rely on Home Assistant to power their smart homes, and we’ve seen firsthand how important local control, privacy, and flexibility are to them. By joining the Works with Home Assistant program, we’re reinforcing our commitment to open, reliable smart home solutions. With the upcoming launch of our Shelly Wave Long Range devices—offering wireless coverage of up to 1 kilometer — we’re pushing the boundaries of what smart home technology can do. Combined with Home Assistant’s powerful platform, this will be a market-leading solution, capable of covering use cases no other ecosystem today can reach. Together, we’re building the future of smart homes: open, powerful, and ready for real-world demands.”

Five devices are a lot to bring in, but this is just the first wave. Shelly hasn’t announced what’s next, but it is clear that many more devices are coming to the “Works with Home Assistant” program.
