Lupinis one of the best series on Netflix. That’s big praise considering the competition, but I found myself hooked after the first episode and I couldn’t stop myself from binging the entire thing; I’m eagerly awaiting the upcoming fourth season. It has stellar acting, especially from its lead Omar Sy, and bundles of charm and style.

It’s set in Paris and is about a man called Assane Diop, whose father died in jail after being framed for the theft of a necklace. Many years after those events, after being inspired by the stories of gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, Diop plans to avenge his father. What follows is a twisty and gripping tale that moves at a rapid pace.

Lupinis a French production, though Netflix may play it with a dub by default depending on where you live. I recommend adjusting this to hear the original French audio instead and using subtitles. The dub is serviceable, but you can’t beat watching the show as the creators' intended, and it means you can appreciate the entirety of the cast’s performances.

TheScott Pilgrimgraphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley began in 2004 and ended in 2010, before being turned into a film that same year by director Edgar Wright. Despite a disappointing box office, it’s a great adaptation full of energy and visual flourish. Fast-forward 13 years and Netflix releasedScott Pilgrim Takes Off, which is an equally wonderful anime series set in the same universe.

The story of the comics and movie is that the titular character, amateur musician Scott Pilgrim, must battle the exes of his new girlfriend Ramona Flowers in a series of fantastical showdowns. While Netflix’s show has the same characters and setting, it takes a different direction. It’s worth discovering how that transpires for yourself, but it means that there are plenty of surprises in store whether you’re familiar with thePilgrimseries or not.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Offfeatures the vocal talents of the movie’s cast, meaning big names like Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, and Brie Larson are all here, bringing buckets of energy. That is very much matched in the animation, which is bright and suitably over the top, and the entire show is packed full of witty references and jokes. There are no plans for a second season, which is a shame, but what we do have is an excellent self-contained single season, so it’s hard to complain.

Unconfirmed

Crime series are a dime a dozen, but when one arrived on Netflix from the writer and director ofThe Queen’s Gambit, I was immediately in. Thankfully,Dept. Qis every bit as special, and is also adapted from a book—this time the series by Jussi Adler-Olsen—though no prior exposure is needed.

Dept. Qstars Matthew Goode on fantastic form as Carl Morck, a detective who is returning to work after a dramatic incident and wrestling with his demons. He’s given his own department tasked with solving cold cases, except at first it’s literally just him, operating out of a grotty basement in Edinburgh. Despite his talents, Morck rubs many the wrong way, but he’s soon joined by an unlikely band of colleagues, all of whom are given depth and well portrayed.

The writing is smart, with some great character dynamics and occasional dark humor, and the cinematography is also praiseworthy. The show has yet to be renewed for a second season, but it surely deserves one—though withNetflix’s history of cancelations, nothing is a given.

Although it’s not free to share your Netflix account with others nowadays, there are otherways you can get your money’s worth out of Netflix. One such method is subscribing for a single month and binging as many things as you can during that period—and these three shows make excellent choices!
